Shots were fired outside Jefferson Apartments on Ashford Dunwoody Road early Friday. Police found no victims, and a suspect was detained but not yet charged.

Someone fired several shots outside an apartment building on Ashford Dunwoody Road early Friday, and a suspect was detained hours later, the Dunwoody Police Department said. Officers found no victims.

The department gave this account in its release on the shooting investigation, posted at 1:54 p.m. Friday.

What police said happened

Officers were called to Jefferson Apartments on Ashford Dunwoody Road at about 4 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6. Several callers had reported hearing multiple gunshots.

Police said the first reports indicated two things:

  • someone outside Building 7 had fired multiple shots
  • a person inside one apartment might be dead

Officers carried out a welfare check at that apartment. They found it vacant, with no victims inside, the department said. Officers later found the apartment’s resident and confirmed the resident was in good health.

A suspect was identified and later detained without incident by the Brookhaven Police Department, the release said. Brookhaven is about six miles south. Brookhaven officers turned the suspect over to Dunwoody Police detectives for questioning.

No charges announced yet

The department has not named the suspect. Its release says the name “will be released once formal charges are confirmed.” It does not say what led to the shots, where the suspect was detained or whether a gun was recovered.

Police described the case as an active investigation. We will update this story when the department publishes charges or more detail.
