Welcome to Dunwoody. Many of the services new residents need come from DeKalb County or private utilities, not the city: water, sewer and trash are county services, and power and gas come from companies. Use this checklist, then see the full guides linked below.

Who to call first

Natural gas works differently in Georgia. In 1997 the General Assembly opened natural gas to competition, and Atlanta Gas Light, which serves this area, opened its territory in 1998, according to the Georgia Public Service Commission. You sign up with a certified marketer, which bills you, and Atlanta Gas Light delivers the gas. The PSC publishes each marketer’s contact details, a price index and a marketer scorecard. For a gas odor, call 911 and then Atlanta Gas Light at 877-427-4321.

  • Vehicle registration: register within 30 days with the DeKalb County Tax Commissioner. The commissioner lists a $20 tag and registration fee and a one-time title ad valorem tax of 3% of the vehicle’s fair market value for new residents, plus a 10% penalty on that tax if you register late. The commissioner’s North Satellite office is at 3653 Clairmont Road, Chamblee.

Your home

  • Homestead exemption: apply with the DeKalb County Tax Commissioner. You must own and live in the home on Jan. 1; online filing for that year closes in mid-July, and Dunwoody’s city exemption comes with the county’s. Details in our property tax guide.
  • Permits: decks, sheds, pools, additions and front-yard fences need a city permit. See building permits and zoning.
  • Power outages: see who to call and outage maps.

Pets

DeKalb County requires registration of dogs, cats and ferrets within 60 days of a rabies vaccination, when you move into the county or when you get a new pet that needs vaccination, according to DeKalb County Animal Services.
