The DeKalb County Board of Education voted 4-1-1 Monday to make interim leader Norman C. Sauce III superintendent of the district that runs Dunwoody's public schools.

The DeKalb County Board of Education voted Monday to make Norman C. Sauce III the permanent superintendent of the DeKalb County School District. Sauce has led the district as interim superintendent since November 2025.

The district runs every public school in Dunwoody, including Dunwoody High School and Peachtree Middle School.

The board’s vote was 4-1-1, the district said in its announcement of the appointment. The announcement does not say how each board member voted. It also gives no salary, contract length or start date.

How he got the job

The board named Sauce its sole finalist at its Sept. 14 meeting. Georgia’s Open Records Act requires a finalist’s name to be made public at least 14 days before the vote, the district said in its finalist announcement. The final vote came on Oct. 5, the date the district had set.

Who he is

Sauce has 26 years in public education, the district said. His jobs in DeKalb have included:

  • chief of student services, overseeing exceptional education, English language learners, gifted education and early learning
  • area superintendent for high schools
  • Region IV superintendent
  • principal of Chamblee High School, in Chamblee, about 4 miles from Dunwoody

He studied at California State University, Long Beach, and UCLA, and earned his doctorate at the University of Southern California.

“I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve the students, families, educators, and communities of the DeKalb County School District,” Sauce said in the announcement.

Board Chair Allyson Gevertz said, “Dr. Sauce brings a strong commitment to students, educators, and the communities we serve.”

What it means for you

For Dunwoody families, the change is in title, not in leadership. The person who has run the district for nearly a year now holds the job permanently.

The board meets monthly, and its agendas are posted ahead of each meeting on the district’s meeting calendar. School ratings, enrollment and attendance zones for Dunwoody are on our public schools page.
