Dunwoody’s roads belong to two owners. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) runs Interstate 285 and its exits at Ashford Dunwoody Road, Chamblee Dunwoody Road, North Shallowford Road and North Peachtree Road. The city’s Public Works Department looks after 310 lane miles of city streets, 62 traffic signals and 84 miles of sidewalk. DeKalb County runs the water and sewer lines under them.

This week

  • Chamblee Dunwoody Road repaving, Roberts Drive to Spalding Drive. The city’s paving contractor returned the week of Oct. 5 to finish the 2026 program, the city said in an Oct. 7 update on its paving page. Ridgeview Road and Manoah Court are done. Crews are moving through the Whitehall and Manor Oak subdivisions, then the east section of Redfield, and finish on Chamblee Dunwoody Road from Roberts Drive to the Spalding Drive intersection. The city expects all of it to be done by the end of October. It has not posted lane closure times, flagging plans or a detour for the Chamblee Dunwoody Road stretch; expect crews in the road and allow extra time. Questions go to Public Works, 678-382-6850.
  • DeKalb water main work on Spalding Drive and Chamblee Dunwoody Road. DeKalb County’s Dunwoody Knoll Water Main Replacement Project, phase 2, is laying about 2,600 feet of new pipe between Coronation Drive and Redfield Road on Spalding Drive and Chamblee Dunwoody Road, according to the county’s notice. Work started Aug. 10 and is expected to run to March 2027, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays. The county says to expect more noise and traffic during work hours; it has not published lane closures or a detour. Call 1-800-986-1108.
  • I-285 and state routes. Georgia 511 listed no lane closures inside Dunwoody when we checked Thursday, Oct. 15. Overnight GDOT work on I-285 appears on 511 as it is scheduled; check before you leave.

State projects: I-285 express lanes

GDOT plans two barrier-separated express lanes in each direction across the northern half of I-285, the stretch that runs through Dunwoody, according to its I-285 Express Lanes page. The lanes would be tolled and need a Peach Pass, like Georgia’s other express lanes.

GDOT says the environmental study is still in development and that procurement, final design and construction will be phased. No construction date in Dunwoody has been announced. Project maps are on GDOT’s Top End Express Lanes site, and questions go to majormobility@dot.ga.gov.

City paving in 2026

Dunwoody planned 13.8 lane miles of resurfacing on 32 streets this year and later added Sumac Drive, Sanlee Lane, Arrie Way and Ridgelock Court, according to the city’s paving page. The list includes Atcheson Lane, Cedarhurst Drive, Chamblee Dunwoody Road north of Roberts Drive, Coach Lane, Dunwoody Junction, Dunwoody Station Drive, Jett Ferry Road, Layfield Drive, Mile Post Drive, Mount Vernon Way north of Mount Vernon Road, Redfield Road east of Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Ridgeview Road, Trailridge Drive, Whitehall Pointe and Whitehall Walk. The full list is on the 2026 paving map.

Paving in Lockridge Forest is delayed until 2027 because of DeKalb County’s water main replacement project, the city says.

A hole left around a manhole on a freshly paved street is usually deliberate, the city says: crews leave it so the manhole can be raised to the new surface later.

The city says it has paved 271 lane miles, 89% of the way to its goal of resurfacing every city street, and plans to finish by the end of 2029.

Report a problem

Potholes, damaged signs, graffiti and traffic safety problems go to SeeClickFix, which sends the report to Public Works and shows it on a public map. Flooding, ice, signal outages, sinkholes and trees down in the road get a 24-hour response: call 678-382-6850 on weekdays, or 678-382-6700 and press 2 after hours.

What this means for you

  • If you drive Chamblee Dunwoody Road between Roberts Drive and Spalding Drive, expect paving crews before the end of October and water main crews on weekdays into 2027.
  • Before any trip on I-285, check 511 for lane closures.
  • A neat square hole on a new road is a manhole waiting to be raised, not a pothole.
